Experiments

Funnel

Funnel is an expandable netting bag with transparent pull-apart handles inspired by the structure that dissipates force inside the dactyl club of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp. The design allows us to place personal accessories and purchased goods separate from one another in the funnel to reduce our worry running errands outside during this pandemic.

The concept drew inspiration from a body of studies based on the Peacock Mantis Shrimp and over the course of three months, material models and concept designs were built informed from the studies. To begin, research were conducted referencing scientific studies of the shrimp's biological make-up, color disposition, physiology and ethology. The facts findings experimented with material models with resin, PVC sheets, copper wire, bioplastic recipes, mesh, wax, and more.

The work and process were taught and guided by Etty Beke at Pratt Institute.
